Risk Management at Middlesex University
Risk is an expanding subject area within Middlesex University, which brings together research, postgraduate education, specialist training and consultancy activities. We co-ordinate this through the Centre for Decision Analysis and Risk Management (DARM).
DARM is both a Research Centre within the School of Health and Social Sciences and an umbrella organisation bringing together university groups with an interest in risk, risk assessment and risk management.
Within the centre our research is currently focused, mostly, on the development and application of decision-making and risk management strategies in public health, occupational safety and the environment (natural and built). However, the Centre takes a multidisciplinary approach, which encompasses the natural scientific, socio-economic, psychological, legal, philosophical, ethical, and communication dimensions of risk management. This ethos and experience underpins all our teaching and training.

Centre for Decision Analysis and Risk Management
Now recruiting for September 2010
Postgraduate Degrees in Risk Management
All the programmes continue to examine risk from a strategic perspective - students learn how sustainable decision making in conditions of uncertainty and conflict needs to make sense of many sources of information, gathered and interpreted by individuals and professionals with vastly different aims, values and perceptions. The programmes are designed for people who have expertise in one area of risk and are being asked to take on a wider portfolio or others that simply wish to approach risk from a holistic perspective. The programme structure is modular and therefore modules can be studied individually and/or be taken in combination to achieve one of three postgraduate awards (Post Graduate Certificate in Risk Management, Post Graduate Diploma in Risk Management, MSc Risk Management), which simply represent different exit points to suit different individual education requirements.
Degrees in Occupational Health & Safety
The industry need for graduate professionals in these areas has never been greater, and organisations benefit from having pragmatic, competent advice to sensibly manage risk rather than create risk adverse cultures often seen as contrary to other organisational objectives.
The BSc (Hons) is a practitioner focused award primarily for those who are developing professionals. The MSc, however, has a higher level of strategic risk management as a focus for professionals who wish to raise their academic and professional level, and those transferring from other professions who already hold graduate or post-graduate qualifications.

Changing Lives
To quote MSc Graduate Jayesh Patel....
"The MSc Risk Management is a great course ideal for any student who wishes to broaden their horizons and open a world of new career changes. As the course is taught from a multi disciplinary approach, the words "Risk Management" can be applied to almost any field in any business.
The course has changed my life completely. Having done an honours degree in Business Studies I was planning to pursue a career in business management, but the Risk MSc has opened doors to new careers in the health and safety, environment and policy making sectors. The key to this course is the students and teachers you meet, they all have expertise in particular fields which give you the ability to network.
Currently I work as a safety engineer for a rail, construction and civil engineering company, the work involves me managing the safety of large construction and civil projects for the London Underground & Dockland Light Rails. I am also working towards a chartered status with IOSH which I hope to have mid next year. The degree has given me the ability and confidence to manage large projects with a practical approach to safety and the ability to accept, communicate and manage certain risk.
The course is well structured and gives the student an array of modules ranging from business, environmental science, health and safety. The lecturers and professors who teach the course deliver to the highest standard and ensure their students have as many resources as possible. I would like to thank the members DARM and my fellow students who provided me the support necessary to accomplish this degree."
Middlesex Masters Students Celebrate Success!
