Managing Risks to the Public: Lessons from Children’s Play Provision
Professor David Ball, Middlesex University
For thirty years, there have been serious and very public debates regarding children’s play provision focusing on risk and the toll of injuries. Recently, the spotlight has switched to the benefits of play and the need for children to experience risk because they want and need to. This raises very challenging questions about how risk decisions are made in this context and who is best placed to make them. The issues in play also raise questions about the wider use of standards, and the concept of best practice, in the public arena, generally.
