What are the opportunities for PhD study with DARM?

DARM is offering up to three full-time PhD positions in values-based decision making. Currently there are no scholarships or grants available. However, DARM is actively pursuing a range of funding possibilities and potential students should not be discouraged by current financial constraints.

Values-based decision-making is an emerging field of study and practice, aimed primarily at fostering greater transparency and accountability in professionals' decision making.

Values-based decision making has many facets, and we are open to enquiries from students of any discipline.

To qualify for the programme applicants require a Masters Degree or equivalent, or a Bachelors Honours degree in a discipline appropriate to the proposed research, and evidence of a research project in their degree.

We are particularly keen to hear from potential PhD candidates with a background in: Economics, Psychology, Philosophy, Health Care, Marketing, Software development and Risk Management.

DProf

This programme offers an opportunity for professionals working at senior level to utilise their experience and knowledge gained at work towards academic awards at the highest level. The programme is designed for senior professionals who have substantial experience in their field and who are able to demonstrate the capability for sophisticated project work. Normally candidates will already hold a Masters degree. The doctoral programme is particularly appropriate for those senior professionals who are self -directed, learn independently and who wish to gain an award that enhances effective performance.

DProf awards are equivalent in value to traditional PhD awards - but are different in method. The DProf programme focuses on advanced learning that enables candidates to attain excellence in professional practice and/or achieve significant organisational impact. The programme is project based and candidates must be able to demonstrate how their project(s) will enhance the knowledge base and/or relevant professional group.

Overview

The DProf programme has been developed specifically to reflect the complex developmental work and learning needs of senior professionals working in the areas of health and/or environment.

It is designed to:

  • Contribute to the enhancement of effective performance.
  • Enable participants to develop rigorous research and project management skills
  • Facilitate the development of deep understanding of change management and leadership.
  • Allow participants to demonstrate a significant contribution to professional and/or organisational learning and development.

Programme outline

The components of the programme are

  • Review of learning, which may lead to a claim for accreditation of prior learning
  • Programme planning and rationale in which participants set out their intentions for future study

Successful completion of this will enable candidates to continue with research and development in professional practice and project work, as well as attending an expert seminar programme. Taught elements of the programme consist of facilitated seminars and project work. While different elements of the programme attract different credit points, it must be emphasised that it is the totality of the experience which constitutes the programme; there is no hierarchy of experience

Duration of programme

The programme length is between 24-60 months. The actual length of the programme is dependant on the amount of learning that the candidate has already achieved (whether certificated or experiential) that can be accredited against the award.
