Work Based Learning

The university is the country’s leading provider of work based learning, has worked with a range of leading companies and has developed strategic partnerships with many workplaces and agencies. The work of the university has been acknowledged at the highest level including the granting of a range of awards for innovation.

The recently created Institute of Work Based Learning and the Centre of Excellence in Work Based Learning are both based in the university.

The academic team are strong supporters of WBL and have incorporated WBL into the design of many of the programmes in the area to ensure a strong link between practice and theory.

Recent initiatives have seen members of the team short-listed for business development funding from the joint UK research councils to look at the role of learning in teams and learning through projects. These are key areas in which risk related activities can benefit from a work based approach.

Recent research into the use of work based learning within the environmental health discipline is outlined here.

Risk Management Education in Work Based Learning

We see a key role for risk management education in the field. Currently we link directly with the Master and Doctorate in Professional Studies in Health and Environment in the School of Health and Social Sciences and are developing a MProf/DProf in Risk Management. Details of the former two programmes here.

In addition we contribute risk management units to the current Post Graduate Certificate in ‘Management of Critical Incidents’. Other major developments in policing are under development.
