The Risk Management team contribute to the following work-based programmes at the Metropolitan Police, which are delivered by the Criminology Department in the School of Health and Social Sciences.
Post Graduate Certificate in ‘Management of Critical Incidents’
This award is the first stage towards the MA and provides a recognised academic qualification for those students who do not wish to progress further. It is achieved through the following pathway.The first 60 credits are achieved by
- Successful attendance of the National Senior Investigating Officer’s Development Programme at the MPS Crime Academy
- The completion of a 500 word essay that reflects on your personal learning, development outcomes and the possible impact on your work practice.
An additional 20 credits are achieved by
- Attendance at a taught module designed by the Crime Academy. It is anticipated this will be delivered on Crime Academy premises during a specified week and consist of a series of lectures and seminars that will provide students with sufficient knowledge to deliver one piece of written work (2000 words) on a topic raised during the lectures and a presentation on the final day.
Masters Degree in ‘Critical Incident Management’
For those who wish to progress beyond the PG Cert a further 100 credits can be obtained through the following three stages.
Stage one - 10 credits
- Each student will be required to develop in conjunction with the MPS and Middlesex University a personal module of learning and development that reflects the individual’s personal experience. This will also help develop the focus of the final project at stage three below.
Stage two - 30 credits
- A taught research module that will prepare the student for the final project.
Stage three - 60 credit
- Each student will be required to research a project as specified at the time of stage one above. This will be a report of 12000 words on an issue located within your working environment that will provide an informative conclusion for your employer. Middlesex University recognises that some issues may be sensitive and/or of a confidential nature and will ensure confidentiality, where appropriate, and enforce its usual high ethical standards.
